Sacred Groves

A Sacred Grove of trees had special religious importance and significance to a particular culture. The Gaullish term for a Sacred Grove was “Nemeton.” From this word comes the name of the Goddess, “Nemetona.” Arnemetia means, “She who dwells in front of the Sacred Grove.” During the Northern Crusades churches were built on the sites of sacred groves. Ancient holy trees still exist in Britain, and certainly “Rag Trees” can be found in Cornwall and Derbyshire.
